A Word From Fire Chief Mike Hill

The City of Fayetteville is an outstanding community in which to live and work and take advantage of the many opportunities for family fun.  One of the goals of the City is to ensure a safe and secure community. The Fayetteville Fire Department consistently works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a collaborated effort in ensuring a safe and secure community. As stated in our mission we are committed to the preservation of life, property, and the environment through effective public education, fire code enforcement, and emergency response. We continuously aim to eliminate or reduce preventable incidents that can have a negative impact on our citizens, the community, and visitors. And in the event that a disaster occurs, we strive to mitigate the incident with reliable and professional services.

The proud men and women that make up the Fayetteville Fire Department are dedicated to providing efficient and effective services. And I greatly appreciate the team effort and our investment in the future of our organization. As always, we continue to move forward serving the citizens with R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Michael Hill was named Chief of the Fayetteville Fire Department on May 27, 2019. Hill had served as interim chief since March and as deputy chief since 2010.

Chief Hill began his career following a junior high school job shadowing program in 1987 with a Fayetteville Fire Battalion Chief. He started with the Wade Community Fire Department, where he has been chief since 2004. Hill has served the Fayetteville Fire Department for over 25 years, starting as a firefighter in 1993 and rising through the ranks to lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, deputy chief and now chief.

“Michael Hill has the talent, experience and leadership abilities to be Fayetteville’s next fire chief,” City Manager Doug Hewett said. “Chief Hill is the utmost professional, who has great respect and admiration from within the Fayetteville Fire Department. I’m confident in his abilities to lead the department.”

“It is a great honor and fulfillment of a life-long dream to be named Fire Chief for the City of Fayetteville,” Hill said. “I have dedicated the past 31 years as a public servant preparing for this opportunity and I look forward to leading the Fire Department into the future.”

Hill has managed or been assigned to every division of the department. As chief, he will head a staff of 331 and oversee a $29 million budget for a department that is internationally accredited and has achieved an ISO rating of class 1, which is the best possible rating. ISO stands for Insurance Services Office and their rating describes how well a fire department can protect the community. Insurance companies also use the score to help set insurance rates.
